Computer care & support · Austin, Minnesota

Your computers, looked after by someone you can actually reach.

Up Technology keeps home and small-business Windows computers updated, watched and running well. A small helper on each computer reports its health. Jamie watches every one in one place, you get a plain-English report every month, and a real person steps in when something needs doing.

Month to month, cancel anytime. Every price quoted up front. For Windows PCs and laptops.

How it works

A quiet checkup that never stops

A small helper on your computer reports its health to Up Technology's own server. Jamie watches every computer in one place, and you get proof that it's all handled.

First

Install

One minute and one yes. The helper installs as a Windows service and starts checking in.

Then

Baseline checkup

Every computer gets a full checkup as it's found: updates, antivirus, disk, backup, encryption, browser, startup, security settings.

In your hands

Day-one report

What we found, what we fixed, and what is on a dated plan. In writing, in plain English.

From then on

Ongoing care

Checks on a schedule, updates that wait their turn, a monthly report, and a person when something needs doing.

When something looks wrong, a real person usually decides what happens next.

A check turns up a problem and it lands on Jamie's dashboard as an alert. Jamie looks at it and picks one of three paths. Whichever it is, it's on the record and it shows up in your report. Today exactly one fix is pre-approved to happen on its own: restarting a stopped Print Spooler, the Windows service behind printing. We never restart your computer on our own. After about five days without a restart, a reminder asks you to pick a time, and Windows itself may still restart outside active hours to finish updates, as on any PC.

What gets checked

Ten things, watched on a schedule

Each of these runs on its own, in the background. The helper looks at the health of the computer, never the contents of what you keep on it.

Windows updates App updates Antivirus on and current Disk health Free space Backup switched on Encryption on Browser safety Startup programs Security settings

What it looks at

  • Whether updates and antivirus are current
  • Drive health and free space
  • Whether OneDrive or Windows File History is switched on
  • Whether the drive is encrypted
  • Unwanted browser add-ons and hijacked search pages
  • What starts with Windows, and key security settings

The one rule

  • It checks the computer's health, never the contents of what you keep on it.
  • Routine monitoring never sends your documents, photos, email or browsing history. Exactly what is sent, and what never is, is spelled out under Privacy.
Plans & prices

Monthly computer care

What the monthly plan buys is automation: it keeps your computer up to date and running well, and alerts us to warning signs before they turn into a failure. Homes pay one flat rate. A business pays by how many computers it has, and the more it has, the less each one costs.

Residential

Home and family computers

$15/ computer / month
  • Windows updates and third-party app updates handled in the background
  • Failed updates and automation problems fixed at no charge
  • Antivirus watched: if it's switched off or Microsoft Defender falls behind, we're alerted and fix it
  • Early warnings, like a hard drive starting to fail, reach us before they become a breakdown
  • Temporary-file cleanup
  • A help button on your desktop for when you need us
  • Plain-English report every month
Not included: house calls ($75/hour), business use, Macs, tablets and phones, and bigger virus clean-ups or data recovery (walk-in menu, $15 off for members).

Not included: printers, receipt printers, card readers and Wi-Fi aren't in the monthly price, but we can help at $75/hour. Medical or dental office? Ask first: patient records need a separate agreement.

For businesses

What you're buying, in plain terms

Six things a business owner should know before signing. Everything here describes the service as it runs today, not a roadmap.

A small agent on each PC

A Windows service that reports health and carries out approved work. It only ever calls out to our server over an encrypted connection; nothing is opened inbound on your network.

One server, ours

A single management server Up Technology operates, hosted in a U.S. data center. No shared multi-tenant software: your inventory and health data live on infrastructure we control.

Health, not content

The agent sends readings and status: updates, antivirus, disk, backup, security settings, installed programs. It does not read documents, email or browsing history.

Nothing acts without a switch

Automated action is gated by named switches, per client and per computer. For a new business we recommend: alert on everything, act on nothing until each switch is agreed with you and written down.

Remote help asks first

By default, a session asks on the user's screen and starts only if they click Allow. While connected, a notice and a Stop button stay visible, and every session is logged. With nobody signed in, a screen session does not start.

Signed, logged, backed up

Every build is code-signed under a Microsoft-issued publisher certificate. Every action we take lands in an audit log. Our database is backed up nightly with an encrypted copy kept off the server.

Where our job stops

Saying it up front saves everyone a surprise later.

Read the technical overview
  • Windows computers only. Not servers, storage boxes, printers, routers, phones, Microsoft 365 or your vendor's software.
  • We don't back up your files. We check that OneDrive is running and signed in. Shared drives on a server are invisible to us.
  • We are not a HIPAA business associate. Healthcare practices, talk to us first.
  • Your business software is never updated without your say. Tell us which programs run your business and we mark them "never update automatically."
  • Not a 24-hour help line. One person. Email is read every day and answered within one business day, a target, not a guarantee.
  • You can leave at any time. Month to month, no fee.
Privacy

What leaves your computer, and what doesn't

The helper sends health information over an encrypted connection to Up Technology's server in a U.S. data center, where Jamie looks after it. Your personal files stay where they are.

What's sent

  • Health and performance readings
  • Update, antivirus and backup status
  • Installed programs and versions
  • Security settings
  • Windows error and crash summaries
  • Account names and network details, like your Wi-Fi network's name
  • The names, never the contents, of programs and scripts in your Downloads, Desktop and temporary folders
  • Messages you type to Jamie
  • Once at setup, and when Jamie asks, a map of your disk space: folder names and sizes, and the names of your biggest files

What monitoring never sends

  • Your documents and photos
  • Your email
  • Your browsing history

During a help session it's different, and we say so: with your approval, Jamie can see your screen and work with files on it, like someone sitting beside you. The session is logged and a recording is kept for 30 days. Jamie also has tools that can copy files to or from your computer, or run commands on it, without a prompt on your screen; our log records each time they're used, though not every command typed. You can ask to see the log.
